Changing Your Diet: Switching To The Glycemic Index Food List
Have your bad eating habits resulted in an ever expanding waistline? We all have bad health and bad eating habits that can be improved with the glycemic index food list.
Making any lifestyle change can be done in either of two ways…cold turkey or by a more gradual method.
The initial change to eating foods that are low on the glycemic index food list is the hardest one. The hard part is really just making the decision to do it, the rest comes pretty naturally. Once you start noticing all the pounds falling away and how much better you feel, you’ll look forward to incorporating even more changes in your diet.
Here’s why the switch can be difficult.
We’re all controlled by our habits. Chances are you’ve been eating the same types of foods (bad ones) for most of your life. No criticism of your lifestyle or even of you, we are all that way.
When dieting, so many of us “fall off the wagon” because it can take some real effort and motivation to squelch our habits and make positive changes to our lives.
Some of us lean toward gradual change…others go the drastic, all or nothing route. There’s many ways to incorporate diet changes and it all depends on the sort of person YOU are. Either way, there’s no right or wrong.
So, you need to ask the question, “What type of change is right for me?” If you go with the sort of change that best fits your personality, you have a better chance of success.
Drastic Changes in your Diet.
Most of us initially try to go with a drastic change to our diets. Going “cold turkey” from bad foods. It makes immediate changes to our habits and we will see results faster. It can be a bit more difficult, but with a good strategy, it can be done.
The first thing you need to do is get rid of temptation. If you have bad foods in the house, you’ll eat them! You could throw out all the bad food and start from scratch – which is foolish, expensive and wasteful. Or, you could hold off doing your shopping until you’ve used up all the food.
When grocery shopping day comes, write out a shopping list of foods that have a low glycemic number – or just print out a copy of the glycemic index food list and head to the store. Be sure to stick to the list and stock your pantry with food that is good for your health and diet.
If you stick to the list, that means you will have nothing in the house that is bad for you! You are “trapped” into eating healthy foods!
Incorporating changes in your diet that are more gradual.
Making gradual changes can – counter intuitively – be a little more difficult. But, for some of us, it’s the only way to go. Unfortunately, making the change more gradual, means that you still have bad options in the house and you will be tempted to gravitate toward them.
The trick to making a gradual change is that when you go to the store, make it a point to purchase at least one thing from the glycemic index food list. Once you’ve made a change – never go back to the old options. Sooner or later, everything in your diet will have a low glycemic index ranking.
Now that we know WHAT to do to make the change in our diets, the question is, why?
Eating foods that rank low on the glycemic index food list is good for our general health…it helps prevent heart disease, helps diabetics control their blood sugar levels, and other benefits too numerous for this article. It’s not just a safe diet plan. (But it IS one of the best ways to lose weight!)
