The prevalent economic system in our world today has lead to a situation where it is very difficult for developing nations to be competitive without slashing their prices further and further. This has lead to a situation where many producers and labourers barely even break even and hence, do not have enough money to maintain a decent quality of life. Fair-trade seek to create a more equitable distribution of wealth, albeit at a slightly higher cost.
