Why Are Dietary Supplements Good For Us?

Nowadays people are more health conscious than ever before and are more willing to spend money on their wellbeing. It’s no surprise that the market for dietary supplements is growing and we can see advertisements everywhere, in newspapers, magazines, on TV, buses, trains, and of course the internet. But are they safe to take and do we really need them?

In 1994, Congress passed a law that defines dietary or nutritional supplements. It goes something like this: supplements must contain some sort of ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, or amino acids to supplement the diet. They may not be represented for use as a conventional food and must be clearly labeled as dietary supplements.

Supplements come in a variety of forms, such as pills, capsules, powders, gel tabs, extracts, or drinks. They are much more than just vitamins and minerals. They can include herbals, botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, animal extracts, probiotics, and other beneficial ingredients.

There are many reasons why people take them. They want improved health and wellbeing, increased energy, clearer skin, sharper mind, healthier heart, improved sleep, improved libido, fewer trips to the bathroom, and so on.

Do they actually work? They work by complementing your diet and can offer many other benefits as well. What is important is quality. Low quality products won’t help you much. In fact, if you’re buying low quality products, you’re not only wasting your money, you’re taking risks with your health.

How do you recognize a good product from a bad one? Read all the label information, read the ingredients, know the ingredients and choose a good brand from a respectable company that stands behind their products.

Dietary supplements are beneficial, especially for people who are not getting enough nutrients from their diets. But when it comes to promises, don’t believe everything you read. Just use caution and a bit of common sense and you will be healthy and safe.
